Congratulations Track Ratz and Chuck Treece with Romantic Fire!
Trainer Charles Treece has a formula that has worked when it comes to finding the right horse for the ownership partnership headed by Cindy Davidson, Linda Cannon, Laurie Marine, and several other close friends from Orange Park Acres.
“Each year we attend the Los Alamitos Equine Sale and walk straight to Ed Allred’s consignment,” Treece said. “We pick out a couple of horses and then we try to buy the best horse that we can afford. His yearlings come from the top studs and the top mares and we’ve done well with several of them over the years.”
Hard Hitting, the winner of the Governor’s Cup Futurity and Derby and finalist in two other major graded stakes races, is the group’s biggest success story. The son of TR Dasher earned $358,923 over his 13-race career and now stands at Firth Ranch in Hemet, California.
The Allred-bred Romantic Fire is the partnership’s latest star, as the gelding by Walk Thru Fire finished powerfully to post a ¾ length victory in the sixth of eight trials to the PCQHRA Breeders Futurity on Sunday at Los Alamitos. Ridden by Cesar De Alba, Romantic Fire covered the distance in the fastest qualifying time of :17.704. A two-time winner from six starts, Romantic Fire qualified to the Governor’s Cup Futurity earlier this year.
“Before the night started I was wishing that the trials were at 400 yards because this horse can run all day,” Treece said. “I was just hoping for a good break. He’s a big colt and he can finish.”
The partnership acquired Romantic Fire for $32,000 at the Los Alamitos Equine, which even then seemed like a bargain for Treece.
“I thought he would go for $15,000 more,” Treece said. “I was thrilled to buy him.”
Several of Romantic Fire’s owners are from the Orange Park Acres area, an equestrian community in Orange County with an abundance of fenced riding trails with an emphasis on a horse loving lifestyle.
Charles Treece has enjoyed his time training for the partnership of Linda Cannon, Cindy Davidson, Laurie Marine, and several other syndicate members. The partners have campaigned some outstanding horses over the years, starting with Governor’s Cup Futurity and PCQHRA Breeders Futurity finalist Bikers Bono followed by Governor’s Cup Futurity and Derby winner Hard Hitting, and recently California Breeders Freshman Stakes winner Stel Hawk.
Treece and the partners appear to have a couple of more nice runners in their stable, headed by maiden winner Romantic Fire, a Walk Thru Fire gelding which posted a mild upset over a strong field on Friday night at Los Alamitos. Romantic Fire (photo above) was as gutsy as it gets in his way to victory, as he trailed early on after bumping at the start before talented rider Eulices Gomez urged the gelding to blast through a tight opening in between horses before edging the hugely talented Free Swinger by a head. Romantic Fire returned $9 for winning his career debut win while covering the 300-yard distance in :15.861. Bred by Ed Allred, Romantic Fire is the son of the 13-year-old mare Romanticist, a winner of five races during her 26-race career. Romanticist won the 2007 Florentine Handicap and was second in two other stakes races at Los Alamitos.
